Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Educational policies play a crucial role in shaping the future of a nation's human capital. In Lokoja Local Government, Kogi State, the government has implemented various educational reforms aimed at improving the quality of education, including curriculum updates, teacher training, and infrastructural development. However, the success of these policies is often contingent upon public understanding and support. Print media, especially local newspapers and magazines, have been instrumental in disseminating information about these educational policies and their expected impact on the community. Through features, reports, and opinion pieces, print media outlets provide citizens with insights into new educational initiatives, the rationale behind them, and how they can benefit students and educators (Akinleye & Musa, 2023). Despite these efforts, questions remain about the effectiveness of print media in promoting educational policies in Lokoja. This study aims to assess how well print media has contributed to the public’s understanding and support of educational policies in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While print media outlets in Lokoja have actively covered educational policies, the level of public awareness and support for these policies remains inconsistent. In many instances, local residents have expressed confusion or resistance to some of the proposed reforms, potentially due to ineffective communication or a lack of community engagement in policy discussions (Ogundele & Onifade, 2024). Moreover, there is a lack of empirical research on how print media specifically influences public opinion and the implementation of educational policies in Lokoja Local Government. This study seeks to evaluate the role of print media in bridging the communication gap between policymakers and the public, assessing its effectiveness in promoting educational reforms and fostering a positive response from the community.
